Description

Aktiv Equine Stead-E Calmer Supplement is a sophisticated calming complex for horses containing L-Tryptophan, Magnesium, B-Vitamins, Probiotic, and Seaweed.

Aktiv Equine is a pharmaceutically developed horse care range, providing the horse with the support it needs to live well and be healthy.

Stead-E (‘Steady’) is formulated to reduce anxiety and promotes both relaxation and concentration. A relaxed horse will respond better to environment stimuli and work more positively and correctly too.

Stead-E contains key components L-Tryptophan and Magnesium (Oxide and Amino Acid Chelate), but also considers the body’s role in processing these key components for best efficacy:

  • L-Tryptophan is a building-block from which Serotonin can be manufactured in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter and, in the brain, acts to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.
  • Magnesium and Vitamin B1 play roles in the transmission of nervous impulses. Both show to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.
  • Vitamins B3 & 6 aid the conversion of Tryptophan to Serotonin, which is the neurotransmitter responsible for reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation.
Vitamin B3 also inhibits the liver from breaking down Tryptophan.
  • Manna Oligosaccharides are the dried cell walls of yeasts which clean out pathogenic bacteria. This improves the gut environment where fibre-digesting bacteria thrive, and nutrients can be best absorbed.
  • Seaweed offers an array of vitamins and trace minerals. It contributes to improving the horse’s overall health with benefits such as improved immunity and improved thyroid function. Seaweed also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

Best practices:

  • Start 7 days prior to travelling or competition, or as a routine daily supplement to a horse that requires ongoing support.
  • To counteract initial low dietary uptake, supplement at double the daily dose for the initial 5 days.
  • Thereafter, proceed with the recommended single dose.

Recommended dosage:

  • Horses up to 350kg: Feed 20g per day.
  • Horses over 350kg: Feed 30g per day.

Stead-E is safe to feed long term.

As Stead-E provides a holistic approach in its formulation, an anxious horse’s total environment should be managed too:

  • Feed high quality forage and concentrates containing high fat and soluble fibre.
  • Feed your horse in a set routine with preferably 3 meals or more a day.
  • Offer water and roughage ad lib.
  • Balance feed with intensity and quantity of work done.
  • Feed low-sugar feeds to prevent insulin responses and stay away from oats, barley and maize.
  • Supplement with a high Magnesium supplement.

Tryptophan – A building-block from which Serotonin can be manufactured in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter and, in the brain, acts to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.
Serotonin can’t be fed directly, but 5HTP is the intermediary compound produced in the manufacture of Serotonin from Tryptophan. Thus, Tryptophan is used to boost
Serotonin, improving behaviour in the horse.

Magnesium – Magnesium has an important function in the transmission of nervous impulses, showing to reduce anxiety and improve concentration, relaxation and environmental responses.
Magnesium presents itself in Stead-E Calmer as Magnesium Oxide and Magnesium Amino Acid Chelate, the purest mineral form.

Vitamin B6 – Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) helps catalyse the conversion of 5HTP to Serotonin, thus has a role in improving the horse’s behaviour. A horse on a high-forage diet should obtain enough B6 from bacterial production processes in the hindgut, but a stressed horse or a horse on low-forage could have compromised bacterial production and should then respond to supplementation.

Vitamin B3 – B3 (Niacin) also helps catalyse the conversion of 5HTP to Serotonin but is also an inhibitor to the enzyme that breaks down Tryptophan in the liver. This ensures
Tryptophan gets to the brain to promote Serotonin production, thus indirectly having effect on the horse’s behaviour.
The availability of Vitamin B3 to the horse from bacterial production in the hindgut is also influenced by a low-forage diet or stress.

Vitamin B1 – Vitamin B1 (or Thiamine) plays a direct role in transmission of nervous impulses. It has demonstrated to improve concentration and reduce anxiety.

MOS (mannan oligosaccharides) – MOS are the dried cell walls of yeast which bond to pathogenic bacteria in the horse’s intestine, removing them from the faeces. The fibre-digesting bacteria are thus left to multiply, meaning MOS promotes a healthy hindgut environment.

Seaweed
Seaweed or Kelp is known to contain an array of vitamins and trace minerals. Seaweed has shown to boost immunity, improve thyroid function, and have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. The horse’s overall health is improved.
